Director, Legal Services

The Ottawa International Airport Authority (Authority) is accepting applications for a Director, Legal Services position.

Reporting to the Vice-President, Legal, Human Resources, Security, Emergency Management and Corporate Secretary the Director, Legal Services is responsible for providing legal services and legal risk management advice on a wide range of matters to internal departments.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

  • Provide expert advice on compliance with legislation, internal policies and procedures, legal agreements, and risk management matters;
  • Draft, review and negotiate a wide range of legal agreements, including but not limited to leases, licenses, revenue agreements, service contracts and construction contracts;
  • Review and approve tenders, requests for proposals, non-disclosure agreements, and other procurement process elements;
  • Identify and mitigate potential legal risks in the Authority’s operations;
  • Manage claims and potential claims against the Authority;
  • Collaborate with outside counsel, as needed and oversee their work;
  • Monitor compliance with Ground Lease and related agreements, including leading the annual lease monitoring review by the regulator as well as third party Ground Lease compliance audit reviews;
  • Manage insurance claims efficiently; and
  • Assist with corporate governance tasks, including preparation for Board meetings.

 

The successful candidate must :

  • Be a lawyer who can provide practical advice based on legal principles, risk and an understanding of the Authority’s strategies and priorities;
  • Demonstrate their strategic thinking and their excellent negotiation and organization skills;
  • Be able to communicate important messages to a wide variety of audiences in a timely, succinct and precise manner and must be capable of carrying out difficult conversations; 
  • Be able to manage multiple files at once, work under pressure and adhere to deadlines while adapting to changing priorities; and 
  • Possess a valid driver’s licence (Class G or equivalent).

These abilities, combined with a professional and positive attitude, will ensure success in building positive working relationships in a team environment.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Bachelor’s degree in any discipline;
  • Law degree (LL.B or J.D.);
  • Membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario, having been called to the bar of the Province of Ontario;
  • Minimum of three (3) years of relevant legal experience, in private practice or as in-house counsel;
  • Strong background in general corporate law and contract drafting;
  • Fully conversant with MS Office software; and
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills in English.

    • A security clearance check for an Airport Restricted Area Identity Card (RAIC)
