Manager, Environmental Sustainability

The Ottawa International Airport Authority (Authority) is accepting applications for a Manager, Environmental Sustainability position.

Reporting to the Director, Safety and Environmental Sustainability, the Manager of Environmental Sustainability will be the subject matter expert in this field for the Authority. The manager ensures that the Authority complies with all applicable environmental laws, regulations and best practices, and sets objectives, directions, and priorities to ensure that the above mandate is met.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

  • Plans, develops, and coordinates the implementation of the Airport’s Environmental Management Plan
  • Develops and maintains environmental compliance plans and programs relative to legal and other requirements (guidelines) such as, but not limited to the following: 
    • Glycol mitigation, bio treatment system, monitoring wells, etc.
    • Stormwater management
    • International waste management
    • Technical support for responding to noise complaints
    • Participate in noise management committee
    • Compliance with Federal Halocarbon Regulations
    • Reporting required by Transport Canada (glycol reporting, spills, etc.) 
    • Review and support Commercial Development in lease monitoring processes
    • Hazardous waste
    • Salt use management
    • Administration of Storage Tank Systems for Petroleum Products and Allied Petroleum Products Regulations
    • General waste diversion
    • Environmental assessments as part of the Federal Impact Assessment Act
    • Emergency response planning (spills, etc.)
    • Species at risk (in collaboration with Airside Operations)
    • Monitoring of Canadian Environmental Regulation and Compliance News (CERCN) for changes to regulations
    • Generate reports as required
    • Review of facility alteration permits
  • Manages the Airport Environmental Management Plan that includes several plans/programs supported by Standard Operating Procedures,  including but not limited to:
    • Noise Management Program
    • Stormwater Management Plan 
    • Salt Management Plan
    • Glycol Mitigation Plan
    • Waste Management Plan
    • GHG Management Plan (in collaboration with the director)
    • GHG Stakeholder Engagement Plan (in collaboration with the director)
    • Storage tank inventory management
    • Spill Response Plan
  • In collaboration with the director, develops and implements the Authority’s Net-Zero Plan and participates in sustainability programs such as Airport Carbon Accreditation and Project IGNITE (Eco Canada)
  • Promotes awareness and provides support and instruction to the Airport teams regarding potential environmental concerns
  • In collaboration with the director, develop, implement and maintain an Authority Environmental Management System
  • Liaises with agencies having an interest in environmental matters
  • Researches and develops new processes and techniques specific to Airport operations 
  • Provides professional advice to Airport management, staff, consultants, and tenants on environmental matters in the context of construction projects, tenant applications, and operational procedures
  • Represents the Authority with various organizations and interest groups relative to environment matters
  • Promotes the environmental achievements of the Authority

The successful candidate must :

  • Have excellent leadership skills and the ability to instruct, direct and motivate Airport employees, stakeholders and partners;
  • Be able to develop and implement policies and procedures; and 
  • Demonstrate their excellent analytical skills as well as their superb interpersonal skills.

These abilities, combined with a professional and positive attitude, will ensure success in building positive working relationships in a team environment.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS :

  • College diploma or Bachelor degree in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Engineering, Biology, Natural Resources Management, Sustainability or Chemistry
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in environmental and/or sustainability roles, or related
  • Experience in dealing with various levels of government with respect to environmental regulations
  • Experience in developing and implementing programs, conducting risk management assessments and developing environmental compliance/action plans
  • Knowledge and experience in assessing operations for environmental requirements
  • Experience in developing, delivering and promoting environmental programs
  • Sound knowledge of both scientific and management principles with respect to environmental protection and waste management
  • Knowledge of Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESA), Phase II ESA, remediation programs
  • Project management and leadership experience
  • Hands-on experience in Microsoft Office software
  • Superior communication and written skill in both official languages (English and French)
  • Valid driver’s license (Class G or equivalent)

ASSETS :

  • Master of Science degree in either Environmental Sciences, Environmental Engineering, Sustainability, Environmental Policy, Biology, or Chemistry 
  • Knowledge of the Airport and airline business is desirable
  • Knowledge of GIS software such as ArcGIS
  • Experience in conducting field programs for environmental site assessment and/or remediation projects

ABOUT THE POSITION :

Salary

$90,836 to $102,671 per year in accordance with the current Collective Agreement (July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2024 rates) and based on a work week of 37.5 hours.   

Job requirements

  • Provide a driver’s abstract (issued within the last month)
  • Successfully obtain a security clearance check for an Airport Restricted Area Identity Card (RAIC)
  • Obtain:  
    • An Airside Vehicle Operators Permit (AVOP) 
    • A Radiotelephone Operator’s Certificate
